Wentworth Park Set to Make Way for Thousands of New Homes

The Wentworth Park precinct within Glebe and Ultimo is set for major change as the long-running greyhound racing venue is converted to public green space, helping make room for thousands of new homes in the surrounding area.

Details of the plan were released in reports outlining the long-term strategy for housing growth across Glebe, Pyrmont, Blackwattle Bay and nearby neighbourhoods.

Community Impact

Local residents are set to gain more open fields and shared spaces once the greyhound racing lease ends in 2027. The site will be transferred to the City of Sydney so it can be reshaped into community sports fields and new green areas.

NSW explains in its official information that the project forms part of a broader effort to place more homes close to public transport, jobs and education. Planned improvements include a new ferry stop at the Sydney Fish Markets, an upgraded Wentworth Park light rail station, and the future Pyrmont Metro station.

A connected coastal walkway stretching from Blackwattle Bay to Woolloomooloo is also being prepared as part of the broader precinct renewal.

Housing and Local Growth

Sources confirm that the redevelopment of the Wentworth Park Sporting Complex will enable rezoning that could support up to 2,500 new homes. This will add to approximately 4,800 homes already planned or approved nearby.

A key part of this growth includes the partnership with Mirvac to redevelop the old Sydney Fish Market site. The 3.6-hectare location will become a mixed-use precinct with more than 1,400 homes, including student accommodation, as part of the wider Blackwattle Bay renewal.

Project details explain that the development will include commercial space, retail areas and a large public domain, along with a new foreshore promenade that will form part of the 15-kilometre waterfront walk linking Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo.

Mirvac has stated that its work will focus on community spaces and improved links along the harbour, including cycleways, a central pedestrian lane, and recreational features such as a skatepark and kayak storage.

Infrastructure NSW describes the project as a chance to reconnect Pyrmont and Glebe with Sydney Harbour while placing new homes near future transport links, including the Pyrmont Metro station scheduled to open in 2032. The development is planned to be delivered in stages, with early works expected to begin in 2027 and first housing settlements targeted for 2030.

Local History and Future Use

Wentworth Park has supported greyhound racing for more than 90 years, but officials have explained that the precinct can now take on a new role for the wider community. In public briefings, they highlighted the need to adapt to a changing city and noted that the new layout will offer up to 20 sporting fields.

“The transition of the Wentworth Park Sporting Complex site to new, enhanced open space and community recreation uses is an exciting new chapter that marks the end of an era for inner city greyhound racing that has taken place there since 1932,” Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris said.
