This Cafe Makes The Best Katsu Sandwich In Surry Hills

Sydney has a love affair with Japanese food. Drive around the city and you’ll have countless choices for Japanese-inspired eateries. However, it’s not every day that you’ll find cafes offering Australian-Japanese fusion. So when Chef Kentaro Takayama opened a Japanese fusion all-day breakfast cafe in Surry Hills, foodies just couldn’t help but take notice.

Located in a site once occupied by Cowbell 808 on Bourke St, Cafe Kentaro offers classic Aussie breakfast and lunch, but with a distinctive Asian twist.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve probably come across its sister site in Redfern, Cafe Oratnek, (the cafe’s name spelt backwards). Cafe Kentaro offers the same dishes found at Oratnek, such as the signature katsu sandwiches, but several other dishes with strong Japanese influence.

Some of the items on the all-day breakfast menu include organic toast and spread, poached eggs on toast, cornbread, and Chef Kenny’s another signature dish, crab omelette. For lunch, the best dishes to order, aside from their tasty katsu sandwich, are Ebi burger, Kentaro style omurice, and squid peperoncino.

For his second location, Chef Kenny’s motto remains the same, “make it fresh today, make it fresh tomorrow.” The cafe proudly uses locally sourced and seasonal produce to ensure the quality of every dish they serve. Interior is almost similar to its sister site, with its rustic materials and sharp lines. The inviting dining room makes it a cosy place for dates and gatherings with small groups of friends.

Similar to that of Cafe Oratnek, everything here is made in house except for their bread which is sourced from Sonoma Bakery in Alexandria, and coffee which comes from Aroma Coffee.

If you want to experience Cafe Kentaro’s unique dining experience, visit them at 616 Bourke St, Surry Hills. They are open from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm on weekdays and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at weekends.
