Former Cue Clothing Headquarters in Holt & Hart Building Now For Sale

A slice of Sydney fashion history has hit the market, with the former Cue Clothing headquarters now available for sale in Surry Hills’ landmark Holt & Hart building.

The sprawling double-storey penthouse at 50 Holt Street offers 4613 square metres of premium office space across levels six and seven, connected by an open internal staircase. The property comes with landscaped balconies, rooftop entertainment areas and panoramic views across the city skyline.

Built specifically for the fashion label, the space reflects Cue’s creative vision throughout its design. Level six spans 1908 square metres, while level seven covers 1890 square metres and features a distinctive sawtooth roof with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to pour in from three sides.

According to Matt Pontey, national director and co-head of investment sales at Cushman & Wakefield, the property has already attracted considerable attention from potential buyers in fashion, design and technology sectors, as well as institutional investors seeking a prominent presence in the tightly held precinct.

The building itself dates back to 1968, when it was originally constructed to serve Sydney’s garment industry. A comprehensive renovation in 2010 transformed the structure into what’s been described as a vertical creative village, playing a key role in establishing Surry Hills as a centre for design, architecture and technology businesses.

Today, the Holt & Hart building houses more than 50 premium firms and sits within the Tech Central Innovation Precinct, just 300 metres from Central Station.

Harry George, director of commercial sales at Savills, notes the property’s position at the convergence of design, commerce and innovation within the building.

Privacy and exclusivity feature prominently, with a dedicated express lift and ground-floor car park offering discreet access to the penthouse levels.

The site’s mixed-use zoning opens up various potential future applications, from boutique hotel development to luxury residential conversion, providing flexibility for owner-occupiers or investors.

Cushman & Wakefield and Savills are jointly marketing the property, with a price guide between $35 million and $40 million. Expressions of interest close at 2pm AEDT on Thursday, 4 December.

The sale represents a rare opportunity to acquire space in one of Surry Hills’ most recognisable buildings, in an area that has become increasingly sought-after by creative and technology companies.

Former Home of the Popular Porteño Restaurant in Surry Hills Up for Auction

More than six years after a fire damaged the building, the former home of the popular Porteño Restaurant in Surry Hills is going up for auction.

Since the fire, Porteño owners and chef Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz have moved their establishment to Holt Street with their Bodega tapas bar.

The property on Riley Street then underwent a $2.5-million refurbishment that transformed it into modern office spaces. The refurbishment into a modern office space received recognition at the Australian Interior Design Award and the Idea Awards, alongside various magazine features.

Milligan Group snapped up the former Porteño building and signed the fashion house, AJE, as its tenant.

AJE still has six years left to its lease but the building owners and investors have decided to put the former Porteno site, with a 760-square metre space, up for auction in late November 2021. Interests in the property has been high since this building stands on “one of Sydney’s most tightly held city fringe destinations,” per industry experts.

The precinct in the corner of Cleveland and Riley Streets is due to change in the coming years, with the redevelopment of the nearby Surry Hills Village from the TOGA Group. This precinct is slated to become a shopping centre with 111 apartment units and a boutique hotel.

After the fire, Chinese investors bought the building for $6.66 million in 2016. The site currently has a $13 million price guide.

Porteño Restaurant, which serves mostly Argentinian dishes, continues to operate at its new location. It has been recognized as one of the top 50 restaurants in Sydney by Gourmet Traveller, whilst the chefs were named 2013 Chef of the Year by The Sydney Morning Herald.

In 2020, the owners expanded the Holt Street site by opening Bastardo, a trattoria, and Humble Bakery. Mr Abrahanowicz dubbed this area their own little Porteño precint.

Bastardo in Surry Hills: New Italian Food Retreat from an Old Player

When it comes to food, there’s no doubt that the Italians have conquered Sydney and whilst there is a handful of Italian restaurants in Surry Hills, a new player, Bastardo, is making waves because it’s a really interesting take-off from an old favourite.

Anyone who has been to the tapas bar Bodega x Wyno in the last 15 years will get the same vibe from its latest sibling site next door. Bastardo is definitely a refreshing addition to the Porteño precinct on Holt Street with its mint green tables, bright orange floor and colourful artwork.

The Porteño crew has opened this Italian trattoria as inspired by the owners’ Sicilian and Argentinian/Genoan background and having a meal at Bastardo feels a lot like visiting an extended family.

The team picked the name “Bastardo” because their food is the “bastardised” alternative to Italian dishes. Everything will be simple and classic, made the way it should be enjoyed as comfort food.

Bastardo’s menu features a great selection of fresh pasta like Corn Agnolotti (brown butter, capers, sage), Paccheri (cuttlefish, panchetta, tomato white wine), Tajarin (bottarga, butter and lemon) and the Culurgiones (potato, onion and ricotta with Napoli sauce).

Sister site Bodega’s grilled swordfish and porchetta are also on the list, along with choices of salads and the unique-tasting bullhorn pepper stuffed with anchovies and pepper.

For almost two decades, a generation of customers has loved dining at Bodega. In this new normal, a new peer group is bound to make Bastardo their Italian food retreat.

Bastardo opens from 5:00 p.m. to late night. For the menu or table booking, check their official site or follow their Instagram

“Food was unbelievable. Service – fantastic! The team helped us make some decisions and made some really good recommendations.  The whole process from making a booking to getting the bill was seamless, efficient and professional. Looking forward to checking out Humble next. Thank you for an amazing night.”

“A delicious new restaurant from the Bodega crew, with a lovely vibe and mouth watering menu. We had the entre special (tiny fried pizza!), followed by the crab pasta and potato pasta. All were delicious. For an aperitif, the cocktail list is short but super – the goldfather is a must! Wine list also comprehensive, and we tried a unique Italian style Chardonnay. Great for date night or a catch up with friends.”

Abbie

“Super cool ambience and the food was incredible. Do not leave without ordering the corn agnolotti and olive oil + fennel cake! Will definitely be back when I return to Sydney.”
