Sydney Grammar Expands Sports Campus in Darlinghurst Near Brothel

Sydney Grammar School has purchased a $39 million property in Darlinghurst to support a major expansion, with the site located near an established adult services business.

Expansion Plans and Property Details

Sydney Grammar School has confirmed the acquisition of a three-storey warehouse at 1–19 Hargrave Street, Darlinghurst, purchased in October 2024 for just over $39 million. The building, previously serving as Sony Australia’s headquarters, will be repurposed to house new indoor sports and recreational facilities.

The site is approximately 300 metres from the school’s senior campus on College Street. In a message to parents, Headmaster Richard Malpass stated the expansion will enhance educational and co-curricular offerings, providing additional space close to the main city campus.

Connection to Brothel Noted

The property borders a building that has previously operated as a licensed adult massage parlour under various names, including “Sydney Baby Massage” and “Darlinghurst Massage.” Signage and advertising associated with the business have been documented publicly, though its current operational status has not been independently verified.

Context Within Broader Development Strategy

The Darlinghurst acquisition complements the school’s wider infrastructure plans, which include the separate $54 million proposal to redevelop the Weigall Sports Complex in Rushcutters Bay. That project has received mixed responses, including submissions from nearby residents concerned about overshadowing and amenity impacts.

According to the school, some functions originally intended for the Weigall site will now be shifted to Hargrave Street, allowing the sports complex to retain its focus on outdoor activities.

Development Outlook

The Hargrave Street purchase was supported by an initial private donation, though additional financial contributions from alumni and families are expected to fund further works. Sydney Grammar has not released a development timeline or detailed design for the new facility.

The school has acknowledged the logistical challenges of inner-city expansion, stating the move will help deliver a more holistic educational offering to its senior students.
