Crown Street in Surry Hills is set to come alive when the neighbourhood transforms into a lively open-air Christmas market for the Surry Hills Christmas Fair. Organised by the City of Sydney, the annual event invites locals and visitors to celebrate the season with food, music, and community spirit, while supporting a meaningful cause.

On Saturday, 13 December, from 2:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the stretch between Foveaux and Cleveland streets will close to traffic and open to a festival atmosphere. Crown Street’s usual hum of cafés and shops will give way to market stalls, live entertainment, and festive activities for families and children.

The event remains free to attend, encouraging people from all over Sydney to take part in what has become one of the inner city’s most beloved community gatherings.

A celebration of local business and creativity

The fair showcases the Surry Hills community at its most creative during the Christmas holidays. According to event organisers, local traders and artisans are encouraged to extend their storefronts onto the street or run pop-up activations, from handmade crafts to food tastings. The initiative is designed to help small businesses gain visibility while creating an interactive, festive experience for visitors.

On the day, Crown Street will be lined with stalls offering unique gifts, locally made goods, and Christmas treats. Cafés and restaurants are expected to extend trading outdoors, creating a blend of aromas, colours, and sounds that echo the character of Surry Hills itself.

Expressions of interest for participation opened in September, inviting local businesses, artists, and community organisations to contribute ideas for stalls and experiences. Those in the immediate Crown Street area were prioritised, but others from surrounding streets were also welcomed. Participants will be announced after the Expression of Interest process concludes.

A fair with a cause

Adding purpose to the festivities, this year’s official charity partner is Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT. This non-profit organisation supports children who are sick, living with disabilities, or experiencing disadvantage. Variety provides grants and programs across New South Wales and the ACT, including mobility equipment, therapy support, and learning aids.

During the fair, Variety volunteers will host several family-friendly activities to raise funds for their programs. Families can expect a Santa photo booth for a small donation, face painting, raffle draws, and a colourful hair-spray station. Each activity contributes to Variety’s ongoing mission to ensure that all children have the same opportunities to learn, play, and thrive.

Bringing people together

City of Sydney organisers have described the fair as an inclusive space that blends culture, commerce, and community. The day will feature performances, a pop-up cinema, and spaces where families can relax, mingle, and enjoy the warm December evening.

By sunset, Crown Street is expected to glow with light and sound — a symbol of how neighbourhood collaboration can turn an ordinary Saturday into a memory of community spirit.
