Ditching digital distractions for heavy steam and cold plunges, wellness brand Sense of Self is converting a Surry Hills warehouse into Sydney’s largest indoor bathhouse.
A Subterranean Escape

Scheduled to launch in September 2026, the 1,200-square-metre facility at 529 South Dowling St completely reimagines the traditional wellness experience. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to truly disconnect? The entire two-story complex enforces a strict device-free policy to guarantee absolute mental rest. Ritz and Ghougassian, an award-winning architecture firm, shaped the interior spaces.
They purposefully layered brick, stone, chrome, and heavy shadows to craft a subterranean environment. The resulting industrial-chic aesthetic feels intentionally grounded and earthy, offering a sharp contrast to the busy city streets above.
Extreme Temperatures and Rituals

Bathers will navigate a carefully engineered thermal journey. At the absolute heart of the complex sits the massive 80-degree Celsius sauna. Contrast therapy drives the physical experience here. Guests can plunge into a 10-degree Celsius walk-through cold pool to shock and regulate their core temperature, then gradually thaw out in twin mineral pools heated to a highly comfortable 39 degrees Celsius. A 46-degree Celsius Hammam steam room rounds out the primary circuit.
The brand is also importing its famous Scrub Station from Victoria. This heavily curated, self-guided ritual lets visitors select custom exfoliating products before scrubbing down in the steam room.

Communal Connection
Modern wellness often carries heavy, unrealistic expectations around beauty and physical performance. Sense of Self deliberately strips those pressures away to focus entirely on community and quiet reflection. Dedicated massage rooms and sensory relaxation areas offer space to unwind without judgment.
For those craving intense solitude, quiet mornings will run every weekday from 6:30 a.m. to noon, mandating completely silent bathing sessions. Founder Freya Berwick noted that the company prioritises belonging and care above all else. She explained that this new venue continues their original 2020 mission by providing a fuss-free environment woven into the local fabric, where people can simply come exactly as they are.
