Sydney’s sole major film studio at Moore Park is set to get some long-awaited company, with plans underway for a second large-scale production facility to meet rising demand in Australia’s booming screen sector.

A $100 million capital fund will be allocated to kickstart the development, part of a wider $380 million package aimed at supporting the state’s film, television, and digital games industries. The move comes as local and international productions increasingly compete for limited space, with industry figures warning that the lack of infrastructure could force projects to shift elsewhere.

Since 2021, the Moore Park studio — Disney Studios Australia — has hosted major titles including Thor: Love & Thunder, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Fall Guy, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. But with capacity stretched, industry insiders say additional facilities are essential to maintain momentum and attract future projects.

Several potential locations are being considered, with a formal market sounding already completed. Among the most advanced is a proposal by Greenfields Development Company for a site in Oran Park. The plan includes three sound stages, production offices, workspace for crew, and a multideck car park. However, proponents have acknowledged that the scale of the project will require additional investment to proceed.

Actor and producer Claudia Karvan welcomed the push for a second studio, saying it would ease the challenges often faced by local shoots, such as noise from aircraft, restricted truck access, and burdensome council regulations. She described the announcement as a significant and timely development for the creative community.

Other sites flagged include land near the Eveleigh railyards in Redfern and an area in Silverwater, with interest from a major private investor.

Acclaimed director George Miller is reportedly involved in shaping the proposal, with the aim of ensuring the new facility meets the high standards required by both local and global productions.

State Arts Minister John Graham said the second studio would help secure space for Australian creators, who are increasingly squeezed by large international projects. He described NSW as the centre of Australia’s screen industry and said the investment was a clear signal that the sector is being backed for future growth.

Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the industry contributes $1.2 billion to the state’s economy and supports over 13,000 jobs. He said the funding was designed to attract more productions, boost employment, and grow the economy.

The broader support package will also fund initiatives such as the Made in NSW fund and post-production and digital effects rebates, which have previously supported titles like The Artful Dodger, Anyone But You, and Furiosa.

As the screen sector continues to expand, the proposed second major film studio is being positioned as a key piece of infrastructure to ensure Sydney remains competitive on the global stage.
