Jess Fox: Olympics Star & Former Camperdown Athlete Faces Kidney Surgery

Olympic canoe champion Jess Fox is recovering after surgery to remove a tumour from her kidney. She has made clear her intention to return to training once doctors clear her, with an eye on future international competition.

Surgery and Recovery

Fox, Australia’s most decorated canoe slalom athlete, confirmed she recently underwent an operation to remove a tumour from her kidney. According to her statement on Instagram, the surgery was successful and she is recovering at home. She described the experience as leaving her with “a couple of new scars, a bit less kidney, and more toughness.”

The 31-year-old, once part of Camperdown’s University of Sydney Elite Athlete Program, will miss the final legs of the European Canoe Slalom World Cup as she takes time to heal. While disappointed to step back from competition, Fox said she remains positive and grateful for the care she received.

Camperdown Connection

Although she is now based at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium, Fox’s journey has ties to Camperdown, where she studied under the University of Sydney’s Elite Athlete Program. During her time there, she balanced academics with international competition, helping to shape her approach to performance and resilience.

That foundation continues to be celebrated by the community, linking her academic years to her ongoing sporting achievements. Locals often recall her dual commitments in study and sport before she focused entirely on professional training in Penrith.

Support From Sporting Community

Fox’s announcement drew widespread messages of encouragement from fellow athletes and public figures. Tennis champion Dylan Alcott, swimmer Ariarne Titmus, Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold and actor Lincoln Lewis were among those offering support. Former Australian of the Year Grace Tame and stage performer Sheridan Adams also sent messages wishing her a full recovery.

The Australian Olympic Committee highlighted her long-standing contribution to the sport and community. Committee president Ian Chesterman noted that her determination and resilience were qualities the public had seen throughout her career.

Career Achievements

Fox has collected six Olympic medals across four Games, including double gold at the Paris Olympics, where she successfully defended her C-1 slalom crown and also won K-1. She was Australia’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony, cementing her as one of the nation’s most recognisable athletes.

Beyond Olympic success, Fox holds 14 world titles since 2013, maintaining her position as the leading figure in canoe slalom worldwide. Despite setbacks, including this recent health challenge, she continues to show the determination that has defined her sporting life.
