A former industrial warehouse in Alexandria has opened as the Huntley Street Recreation Centre, featuring four indoor sports courts, three multipurpose rooms and dedicated fitness facilities.
The centre officially opened on Saturday, 31 October 2026, following a redevelopment of the building at 6–8 Huntley Street. A free opening event was advertised with sporting activities, live entertainment and refreshments.
New Sports And Recreation Facilities
The four indoor courts can accommodate basketball, netball, futsal and volleyball, as well as badminton, pickleball and table tennis. Three multipurpose rooms provide additional space for meetings, recreational programs and group activities. The building also includes a dedicated fitness area, spectator seating, change rooms and a reception area.

Outside, the redevelopment incorporates practice courts, landscaped public spaces and bicycle parking. Accessibility features include lift access to the upper-level rooms, accessible toilets and a hearing loop. Construction began in November 2024, with contractor Kane Constructions reporting progress on sports flooring, landscaping, the external awning and internal fit-out in April 2026. The building incorporates rooftop solar panels, natural lighting and ventilation, alongside systems for collecting and reusing rainwater.

More Sporting Options Around Green Square
The Huntley Street Recreation Centre joins several existing sports facilities across Green Square and surrounding suburbs, including Perry Park Recreation Centre, Getiela Sportsfield and Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre. The wider area has undergone considerable residential development, with the population of Green Square and the city’s south estimated at approximately 48,000. Current projections indicate the population could reach 65,000 by 2046.
The new centre adds indoor court capacity for organised competitions, recreational activities and school sports programs. Its multipurpose spaces also accommodate activities beyond sport, including meetings and group events. Information about indoor court hire and community room facilities is available through the City of Sydney’s website. Booking enquiries can also be directed to recreation@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au. Specific booking availability and general opening hours should be confirmed before visiting.
