Wentworth Park is set to enter a new chapter when greyhound racing comes to an end on October 16, bringing 94 years of racing at the Glebe venue to a close.

Greyhound Racing NSW has confirmed that the final meeting will feature the $1 million Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase, marking the end of racing at the site before the former racing precinct moves towards its planned transition to public parkland.
For nearby communities including Ultimo, Pyrmont and Glebe, the change will eventually mean more public space and new opportunities for sport and recreation.
The early departure from Wentworth Park was negotiated between the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association and the NSW Government. The existing lease was previously due to run until September 2027, but an agreement was reached for racing to finish in October 2026.
The City of Sydney says the former greyhound precinct will be converted into community sporting fields and public green space. Once the existing facilities are removed and the land transferred to the City, the area will form part of an expanded Wentworth Park of about 14 hectares.
The future park is being planned as a staged transformation rather than an immediate change after the final race.
The City of Sydney’s community vision includes five sports fields, a large playground, new paths for walking, cycling and exercise, picnic facilities, open grass areas and spaces for young people to gather and skate. The plans also include new changerooms and park facilities, native habitat and biodiversity planting, and a wetland basin.
Mature trees and heritage items are also planned to be preserved, with a heritage building to be maintained and reused as part of the future park.
The plans have been shaped through community consultation. In 2022, the City asked people to help develop a vision for a unified Wentworth Park, seeking feedback on how the area is used and what residents wanted to see in the future.
Feedback identified several priorities, including connections to nature, sport, exercise and play, social activities and events, and making the park easier to access and move through. The City says the expanded 14-hectare park will help meet the recreational and sporting needs of the growing Ultimo, Pyrmont and Glebe areas.
Before that longer-term vision takes shape, there will be one final night of greyhound racing at the venue. Greyhound Racing NSW has planned a major farewell for October 16, with the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase to headline the final meeting. Australian rock band the Screaming Jets are also scheduled to perform after the final race.
The final meeting will mark the end of greyhound racing at a venue where the sport has been conducted since 1932. For nearby communities, it will also mark the beginning of the next stage for the site, with the racing precinct planned to become part of a larger public park through a staged process.
