Camperdown Set For Thousands Of New Homes In Parramatta Road Overhaul

Camperdown is set to anchor a major housing project, with up to 8,000 new homes planned along Parramatta Road to reshape the community and add living options.

A Corridor Ready For Change

The plan targets the stretch of Parramatta Road between Leichhardt and Camperdown, placing the inner-city suburb at the heart of the redevelopment.

The project seeks to transform rundown shops, car yards and factories into mid- to high-rise apartments ranging from six to 20 storeys. Community consultation has begun, with rezoning expected to be finalised within 12 to 18 months.

Homes Near Jobs, Study And Health

Camperdown sits next to the University of Sydney, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and key bus routes, making it a prime site for new housing. Supporters say more homes will help students, health workers and families live closer to work and study.

They also stress that housing supply in Camperdown is tight and rental costs have pushed many out of the area.

A Mix Of Housing And Services

Plans call for a mix of housing, including affordable and not-for-profit homes, as well as improved public spaces, new walking and cycling links and commercial opportunities.

Supporters say these changes would help create a more liveable corridor while reducing pressure on neighbouring suburbs. Importantly, no compulsory property acquisitions are proposed, with development expected to occur block by block.

Community Voices And Local Impact

Community leaders and advocacy groups describe Parramatta Road as tired and underused, noting the corridor has seen decades of failed schemes. They say this latest approach has the potential to deliver housing quickly and in the right places.

By focusing growth in Camperdown, the plan aims to add affordable homes while improving streets, transport and local services.
